Spring on Mackinac Island: A Peek Into my First Trip to The Inn at Stonecliffe

My first trip to The Inn at Stonecliffe was also my first time visiting Mackinac Island, and I honestly can’t imagine a better introduction to the island. From the moment I boarded the ferry in Mackinaw City to the final sunset by the bonfire at Stonecliffe, the entire experience felt peaceful, charming, and unforgettable.

I took the Shepler's Mackinac Island Ferry over to the island, and the process was incredibly easy. Once I arrived, a Stonecliffe porter greeted me at the dock, grabbed my luggage, and loaded everything onto the Stonecliffe carriage. The carriage ride up to the property ended up being one of my favorite parts of the trip. The horses trotted along quiet island roads during the 35- to 40-minute ride, and it felt like the perfect way to slow down and settle into island life.

Visiting Mackinac Island in the spring made everything feel even more magical. It was chilly during my May stay, but the crisp air and quieter atmosphere gave the island such a peaceful charm before the busy summer season began.

When we arrived at Stonecliffe, I immediately understood why people love this property so much. The historic mansion, beautiful grounds, and lake views felt timeless and elegant. The front house staff welcomed me warmly and checked me into my room, the Trillium, which was absolutely beautiful. The natural light pouring through the windows made the entire room glow, and every detail felt cozy, thoughtful, and immaculate.

After getting settled, I headed to Horsey’s and ordered the 1776 cocktail by the crackling fire, the perfect start to the weekend.

One thing I loved most about staying at Stonecliffe was how much there was to experience both on the property and around the island. If you’re looking for things to do in Mackinac Island, Stonecliffe offers such a wonderful mix of relaxation and activities.

Dining at The Straits was a major highlight. The fish dip was incredible, the Caesar salad was fantastic, and the steak frites was easily a 10 out of 10. Every meal felt elevated while still warm and approachable. Oh, and the breakfast! The breakfast was sensational. I’ll be dreaming about the French Toast.

Throughout the weekend, we enjoyed yoga on the property, a pizza-making experience, and a fudge and wine tasting. We also toured the grounds and gardens, where they’ll grow fresh herbs during the summer season, and I loved seeing the chickens roaming the property.

We spent time downtown as well, including a fudge-making class that was so much fun. Of course, I left with plenty of treats to bring home. We also stopped at Pink Pony, where I had one of the best salads I’ve ever eaten.

Exploring the downtown shops was another highlight. Mackinac Island has such a unique charm with its horse-drawn carriages, bikes, flower boxes, and slower pace of life.

One afternoon, we rented bikes from Stonecliffe and rode around the island, which is absolutely one of the best things to do in Mackinac Island, Michigan. The views along the water were stunning, and the fresh air made the entire experience feel incredibly peaceful.

Back at the property, I kept finding myself stopping into the general store for snacks, gifts, and Stonecliffe keepsakes. My suitcase was definitely fuller by the end of the trip.

The perfect ending to the weekend came on our final night. We gathered around the bonfire pit with cocktails, made s’mores, and watched the sunset over the property. It was cozy, peaceful, and one of those moments you wish you could bottle up forever.

What made my stay at Stonecliffe so special wasn’t just how beautiful the property is; it was the feeling it created. Everything felt calm, intentional, and welcoming. From the carriage rides and incredible meals to biking the island and relaxing by the fire, every part of the experience made me want to stay longer.

By the time I boarded the ferry home, I already knew I’d be back.

For anyone searching for things to do in Mackinac Island, Michigan, I truly can’t recommend Stonecliffe enough. It’s such a special place and the perfect home base for experiencing everything that makes Mackinac Island unforgettable.
